Vikings Rookies Eye Starting Positions Ahead of New Season
The Minnesota Vikings are embarking on a new chapter under the leadership of general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, with hopes of revitalizing their roster through effective drafting and rookie integration. As the team gears up for the upcoming season, they have welcomed approximately 35 new players, sparking interest in which rookies might secure starting spots as early as Week 1.
Among the fresh faces, several rookies stand out as potential starters. First on the list is Caleb Banks, a defensive tackle from Florida. The Vikings selected Banks hoping he could be a game-changing player on the defensive line, akin to Sharrif Floyd, who was drafted in 2013. Whether Banks will be ready to step into a starting role depends on his recovery from foot issues, but head coach Kevin O’Connell has expressed optimism regarding his readiness for training camp.
Another contender is Gavin Gerhardt, a center who the Vikings have eyed as a future option for the position. Gerhardt has praised the coaching staff for their genuine support, stating, “The coaches were just genuine, good human beings… People that cared about me as a human being — and that’s what I care most about.” Although he faces competition from veterans Michael Jurgens and Blake Brandel, a standout performance could elevate him in the depth chart.
Dominique Orange, a defensive tackle, is viewed as a strong candidate for immediate playing time. With no injury setbacks and a solid third-round draft selection, he could fill a crucial need for the Vikings at nose tackle, a position currently lacking a clear starter. His size and ability to stop the run make him a prime candidate to secure a starting role.
Lastly, Brett Thorson, the punter from Georgia, faces a unique challenge. Although he boasts a powerful leg, he must adapt to the harsh Minnesota weather and compete against veteran Johnny Hekker, who has seen better days. Thorson’s success will hinge on his ability to handle holding duties for kicks, a skill essential for maintaining a spot on the active roster.
