Viral MotoGP Crash Leaves Alex Marquez With Fractured Neck After Ducati Shatters on Track
MotoGP Gresini Ducati rider Alex Marquez was involved in a huge crash during the Catalan Grand Prix, which led to his neck being fractured. A viral video of the crash on social media shows Marquez’s bike shattering into pieces on the track, while the front wheel hit Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio, causing him to crash.
Not only that, some of the carbon fiber debris from the somersaulting Ducati struck Raul Fernandez and Johann Zarco, leaving them in pain. The crash occurred when Marquez was in a battle for the lead with race leader Pedro Acosta.
Acosta’s KTM reportedly experienced a technical problem, causing it to lose power instantly on the straight to Turn 10. The speed difference between his bike and Marquez’s aggressively gaining Ducati led them to collide. The latter tried to avoid Acosta, but the impact caused his bike to veer toward the wall.
With damage to his bike and at high speed, Marquez was a passenger as his bike neared the barrier. Fortunately, he managed to avoid crashing into the barrier, but a big bump on the grass ejected him from his Ducati, which then flipped violently multiple times, shredding components and debris on the track.
The Ducati’s front wheel, along with a fork, struck Di Giannantonio’s front wheel, causing him to fall and slide into the gravel. The race was red-flagged immediately, while Marquez was attended to in no time. Gresini Racing posted a health update on X after Marquez was diagnosed with multiple fractures. The post read:
“Álex Márquez physical conditions update: Marginal fracture of C7; further evaluation will be completed next week. Right clavicle fracture; it will be stabilized with a plate. He will undergo surgery today by the team at Hospital General de Catalunya.”
