Virginia Tech Football Celebrates a Milestone Day with New Commitments and Initiatives
Tuesday marked an eventful day for Virginia Tech as the football program welcomed new commitments and announced a significant initiative. The excitement began in the morning when Austin Barrett, a three-star cornerback, publicly declared his commitment to the Hokies.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Barrett, who plays for Paramus Catholic in New Jersey, is ranked as the 36th cornerback in the nation and the 12th overall player in New Jersey, according to 247Sports. He chose Virginia Tech over offers from schools like Virginia and West Virginia. “I am choosing Virginia Tech because they truly made me understand what the quote ‘this is home’ feels like,” Barrett expressed to Evan Watkins of 247Sports. “I love my relationship with the coaches, and I believe they are going to rebuild this program and do something amazing. I want to be a part and help this program rebuild to where it was years ago.”
Shortly after Barrett's announcement, Virginia Tech unveiled Hokie Ventures, an initiative aimed at bolstering the university's athletic programs. As described on the official website, this nonprofit organization is designed to enhance the long-term growth and competitiveness of Virginia Tech Athletics through innovative revenue generation and strategic investments.
This initiative comes at a crucial time as college athletics faces rapid changes, including shifts in revenue sharing and Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) regulations. The formation of Hokie Ventures is viewed as a positive development for the athletics department, particularly for the football team, which is already enjoying a successful recruiting season.
In addition to Barrett, Virginia Tech also secured a commitment from Dylan Latell, a 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive tackle from Girard High School in Ohio. Latell chose the Hokies over several competitive programs, including defending national champion Indiana. “It was amazing,” Latell said to Greg Smith of Rivals regarding his visit. “You can tell they truly care about your development on and off the field.”
With Barrett and Latell now on board, they represent the 18th and 19th commitments for Virginia Tech's 2027 recruiting class, which is currently ranked ninth nationally by 247Sports. It has certainly been a remarkable day for the Hokies, who continue to build momentum in their football program. Further details about Hokie Ventures and additional donations are anticipated in the near future.
