Vote. Top Arizona high school boys track athletes, May 11-16

Here are The Arizona Republic's picks for the top 10 high school boys track and field athletes from the twelfth week of the 2026 season (May 11-16). Vote in our poll for the player you think had the best week. The poll closes on Saturday, May 23, at 6 p.m. Print readers can find the poll online at azcentral.com/sports/high-schools.

Both wind-legal and non-wind-legal marks were considered.

Top Arizona boys' track and field athletes

1. Brecken Bellows, Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor, mid-distance, So.

He shocked the field by winning the 800 meters at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 15, running 1:51.91 to set the state lead. Bellows almost broke the sophomore state record (1:51.39). It was nearly a two-second personal best for Bellows.

2. Ryder Hall, Snowflake, jumps, Sr.

The do-it-all jumper showed it doesn’t matter what division you are in. Hall, a Division IV athlete committed to BYU, won both the high jump (6 feet, 10 inches) and triple jump (48-7.75) at the AIA State Track and Field Championships. He also finished fourth in the long jump (23-1.25). 

3. Malachi Joyner, Gilbert Williams Field, throws, Sr.

The Arizona football commit ended his track and field career on a high note, winning the shot put at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 16 with a personal best throw of 61-2 to set the state lead.

4. Jett Merrill, Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge, hurdles/jumps, Jr.

He won the 110-meter hurdles and long jump at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 16, running 13.91 and hitting 23-8. Merrill’s time of 13.79 in the prelims set the state lead and moved him into a tie for No. 9 all-time in state history. He also finished second in the 100 meters, running 10.75.

5. Cristiano Morales, Tucson Salpointe Catholic, sprints, Sr.

He won the 400 meters at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 16, running 47.01 to set the state lead.

6. Crew Comish, Mesa Red Mountain, distance, Jr.

He put in a herculean effort at the AIA State Track and Field Championships, running in the 800 (1:54.03, ninth), 1,600 (4:12.94, first) and 3,200 meters (9:12.70, third) and anchoring the winning 4x800-meter relay team (7:47.87). Comish’s 26 points helped Red Mountain win the team championship.

7. Beckham Goodman, ALA Queen Creek, sprints, Sr.

He won the 200 at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 16, running 21.57. Goodman’s time of 21.12 from the prelims set the state lead and moved him up to No. 8 all-time in state history. He also finished third in the 400, running 47.63 to move up to No. 3 in the state this season.

8. Hudson Hensley, Phoenix Brophy Prep, throws, Fr.

He saved his best for last, winning the javelin at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 15 with a throw of 191-5 on his final attempt. Hensley, who already holds the Arizona freshman record, is No. 2 in the United States for his grade this season.

9. Dameon Brender, Mesa Red Mountain, sprints, Jr.

He won the 100 (10.74) and was second in the 200 (21.66) at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 16, helping lead Red Mountain to the team championship.

10. Dash Wasson, Queen Creek, jumps, Sr.

He won the pole vault at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 16, clearing 17-2 to move up to No. 2 in the state and No. 10 in the United States.

11. Sanel Eminovic, Glendale Mountain Ridge, hurdles, Sr.

He won the 300-meter hurdles at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 16, running 37.24 to set the school record.

12. Trenton Busher-Stanislas, Phoenix Desert Vista, throws, Sr.

He won the discus at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 15, throwing 178-5 to move up to No. 5 in the state.

13. Tyree McSwain, Gilbert Williams Field, sprints, Sr.

He came in second in the 400 at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 16, running 47.15 to move up to No. 2 in the state.

14. Yohanes van Meerten, Flagstaff, distance, Jr.

The 3,200-meter state record holder and Oregon commit made it look easy by winning the 3,200 at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 16, running 8:57.17. He also finished fifth in the 1,600 at 4:13.94.

15. Troy Haymore, ALA Queen Creek, mid-distance, Jr.

He came in second in the 800 at the AIA State Track and Field Championships on May 15, running 1:52.31 to move up to No. 4 in the state.
