Wales Women's Team Faces Travel Setback Ahead of Montenegro Qualifier
The Wales women's national team encountered significant travel issues ahead of their Women's World Cup qualifier in Montenegro, as inclement weather forced their flight to change course. Currently, Wales sits second in League B Group 1, tied with the Czech Republic at 10 points.
Taking off from Cardiff at 16:30 BST on Wednesday, the team was scheduled to land in Montenegro approximately three hours later. However, electrical storms in the vicinity of Podgorica made landing impossible, prompting the flight to divert to Brindisi, a coastal city in Italy.
After spending over three hours grounded in Brindisi, the team opted to remain there overnight, as they awaited an improvement in weather conditions. This unexpected situation left officials from the Football Association of Wales (FAW) scrambling to secure accommodations and make alternative travel arrangements for the following day.
In a statement on social media, the FAW confirmed, "Due to storms in Podgorica, the Cymru women's national team flight was diverted this evening, landing safely in Brindisi airport in south Italy. The team will stay overnight in Italy and will arrange alternative travel to Montenegro ahead of Friday evening's match."
Wales is set to face Montenegro in Podgorica on Friday at 17:00 BST, marking a critical match in their campaign. Following this fixture, they will return to Cardiff to take on the Czech Republic in their final group match on Tuesday.
