Young Holly Springs Surfer Set to Shine at National Championships in California

Twelve-year-old Jacob Hepp is gearing up to face some of the most challenging waves of his young career as he prepares for the USA Surfing Junior Championships in California. Although Holly Springs is not known for its surf culture, Jacob has made quite an impression with his skills in the water, often surprising those around him.

"A lot of people don't expect, like some way from my friends to just be like, actually really good at surfing, and a lot of my friends are just they think it's pretty cool," he shared. Jacob's journey began at the age of six during a family trip to Kure Beach, where he first hopped on a surfboard. "When I was 6, it was way different. I would catch the little wave," he recalled.

Initially, Jacob faced challenges and often finished last in competitions. However, his commitment to the sport led to significant improvements. "I used to just get last every time, but then I just kept working. I'll just be in the water all the time," he explained. His perseverance culminated in a victory at the Eastern Surfing Association Mid Atlantic Regional, which secured him a place at the national level. "Making heat is like a pretty big deal," he noted.

Jacob's father, LJ Hepp, who previously served as a coach at Holly Springs High School and as the athletic director for Panther Creek basketball, expressed pride in his son's dedication. "It's been awesome. Any kid, any parent watching a kid that has a passion for something and is willing to put in the practice time and the effort and their sacrifices...," he said, emphasizing the unique nature of Jacob's pursuit. He added, "I can't correct him. I can't give him tips," highlighting how this aspect has strengthened their relationship.

As Jacob and his mother prepare for their trip to San Clemente, known as a prominent surfing destination and the site of the upcoming 2028 Olympics, he remains focused on his passion. "I just love surfing," he affirmed, ready to make his mark among the nation's top young surfers.
