Here's the thing about Alex Bregman and the Boston Red Sox.
Bregman, one of the better third basemen in Major League Baseball, won't be cheap. The Red Sox gave him a player-friendly type of deal, so he can opt out of it after this season if he wants to. Many expect that to be the case because of the way he was swinging the bat at the start of the year.
However, now that the Red Sox simply haven't played well, they could look to move on from him at the deadline. That likely wouldn't be the right decision from a team perspective, but it isn't the worst idea if they want to save money and head elsewhere.
However, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the more likely scenario is that the Red Sox will attempt to sign him to a long-term deal and go from there.
"...perhaps Alex Bregman, though that seems like an extreme longshot," Feinsand wrote. "Chapman and Buehler are set to become free agents at the end of the season, while Bregman can opt out of the final two years of his contract and test the open market for a second straight year. The more likely scenario, sources say, is that Boston would try to restructure Bregman’s contract into a longer deal."
There's plenty of value in keeping Bregman around, even from a veteran standpoint. They know what they'll get from the right-handed hitter, and that's an elite bat.
Bregman has done nothing but win throughout his entire career, so perhaps he wants to play elsewhere depending on the direction the Red Sox head in.
