Annual Masters North tourney Friday, Saturday

PLATTSBURGH — Tournament director Willie King expects some good competition at the top of the leaderboard when the 42nd-Annual Masters North Golf Championship is held Friday and Saturday at the Malone Golf Club’s East Course.

“We have some strong players and the competition should be very good,” King said. “We have eight to 10 golfers in the Masters North Field that could win it.

“It should be a good shootout.”

The 42-player field, which plays from the tournament tees, will be highlighted by five former champions — defending champion Graham Niles, Ed Davis, Bob Hughes, Geoff Marsden and Jeff Fallon.

Matt King, a runner-up four times in the 36-hole event, is also entered.

The Malone Golf Club is one of the best venues in the North Country and is a good test for the top amateur golfers entered.

“Malone Golf Club superintendent Dustin Beauregard always does a nice job preparing the course,” King said. “The course should finally be firm.

“I think a score anywhere from 144 to 147 can win it, unless the conditions are windy. It can be very challenging from the tournament tees, especially in the wind.”

Tee times for the Masters North Field begin at 10:04 a.m. on Friday.

As of this time, there are 14 golfers who will compete in the Legends Field, which has its first tee time at 9:10 a.m.

The defending champion in the Legends is Graham Cooke, who won the Masters North a record number of times.

“We started the Legends back in 2000 and it’s one of the best things we have ever done at the tournament,” King said.

The total purse combined for both divisions is $5,100 in gift certificates to Plattsburgh Golf Discount. The honoree at this year’s event is past multi-champion Bob Hughes.
