Azteca 17's take Artie Escobado Memorial Baseball Tournament in extras

The final day of the 18th annual Artie Escobado Memorial Baseball Tournament was scheduled to wrap up on Sunday, June 29, at Runyon Sports Complex.

In the first match-up of the semifinals, the Azteca 17’s took on the Azteca 15’s in a gritty battle between the two clubs.

Cole Billings was on the mound for the 15’s, and Sol Montoya was pitching for the 17’s. Both pitchers had a stellar outing, with Billings going four innings and allowing three runs. Montoya went five innings and did not allow a run across the board.

The 17's were only able to get to Billings in the fourth inning as they scored three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead. Montoya and Fonzie Maes combined to shut out the 15's and advance to the finals.

In the other semifinal matchup, BDA took on Wow Factor, and BDA had the lead going into the fourth inning, 2-0. But Wow Factor was able to mount a comeback and win the game by a final score of 10-6 to advance to the finals to play against Azteca 17’s.

After the semifinal wrapped up, there was an exhibition matchup between the War-Dogs and the Spradley Collegians on Hobbs Field. Shortly after the second inning began, Mother Nature interrupted the fun, causing a three-and-a-half-hour rain delay, forcing the championship game for the Artie Escobado Memorial Tournament to be pushed back to Monday, June 30.

In the final's matchup, Wow Factor had Samuel Clementi on the mound, while Azteca threw Blake Swift. Swift gave up 10 hits and three runs, only two earned over eight innings. Clementi gave up two hits, struck out four, and had three earned runs over four innings. Jacob Vondersmith came in relief of Clementi and gave up six hits, one earned run, and struck out three.

The game was tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the eighth inning when Sol Montoya hit a single and drove in the scoring run. The Azteca 17’s walked off to win the Artie Escobado Memorial Tournament by a score of 4-3.

Montoya and Camden Monlux were named to the All-Tournament team from the Aztecas, and Dillon Masset and Julian Reyes were named from Wow Factor. The MVP of the tournament was Blake Swift, and the Best Hitter was Enzo Pecoraro, both from Azteca 17’s.
