Blockbuster NFL trade shakes up Steelers roster around former Packers QB Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins agreed to a blockbuster trade on Monday, shaking up the Steelers roster around former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers entering the 2025 season and potentially increasing the difficulty of a game on the Packers schedule this year.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Steelers agreed to send Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a draft pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith and a draft pick.

Ramsey gives the Steelers an All-Pro level coverage player, while Smith is coming off a season in which he caught 88 passes and made the Pro Bowl in 2024.

The Packers go to Pittsburgh to play Rodgers, Ramsey, Smith and the Steelers in Week 8 of the 2025 regular season. The primetime showdown will feature two teams entering the season with Super Bowl aspirations; the Packers are young, likely ascending and coming off back-to-back playoff trips under Jordan Love, while the Steelers added several veterans this offseason and are going all-in during what is likely to be Rodgers' final NFL season.

Among the additions are Rodgers, receiver DK Metcalf, receiver Robert Woods, running back Kenneth Gainwell, cornerback Darius Slay and safety Juan Thornhill.

Metcalf, Woods and Smith provide experienced pass-catching options for Rodgers, while Ramsey and Slay are a big-name cornerback duo for the Steelers defense.

The Packers beat Ramsey and Smith during a 30-17 win over the Dolphins in November of last season. Smith caught 10 passes for 113 yards, while Ramsey had one tackle and one pass breakup.

The Packers face the Steelers on Sunday, Oct. 26 at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
