Broncos QB Bo Nix self-scouted his rookie season: 'You want to get better'

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix impressed in his rookie season, but he needs to make progress this offseason if the Broncos are going to make it beyond the first round of the NFL playoffs next season.
So, what does Nix need to do to take the next step in 2025?
“That’s a loaded question," Nix said when asked about his next steps in January. "I’ll be able to go back and reevaluate, kind of do a little self-study of the season and get more of that information, know what I need to learn and to grow from. It’s the same every year. You want to get better.
"Most important is to get your body back and get it fresh for the next season, take care of anything that’s hindering me from playing at my fastest level. When it comes to that, body work is great. Workouts, throwing, all of the typical things you do throughout an offseason — the fun stuff. I enjoy the film study, and the self-scouting and the things that I can jump ahead on for next year and just kind of be a little bit more ahead after knowing a little bit more of what to expect.”
Many successful quarterbacks took a big leap from their first to second seasons, which suggests their second offseasons in the NFL were crucial for their development. Broncos coach Sean Payton was asked about that notion following the 2024 season.
"I subscribe to every one of those offseasons [being] important in their growth," Payton said of second-year quarterbacks. "They do have a much better handle as to the tempo of the game is faster. It’s just quicker between plays. The college game can go on forever. The in-and-out, up-and-down, on-and-off, in the huddle, in-and-out, up-and-down, on-and-off, in the huddle… That is so much quicker in our league than it is in college, so that’s an adjustment. Then the speed of the defenses, the disguise of the defenses.
"In college you might get a little tilt, and then a rotation. In our league, you might get a safety that’s in the d-gap that will end up… So the complexity of third down. The college game does a great job with it, but it’s much different, much faster in our game. Now you get that deep breath and you’re like, ‘All right, this is what it’s like.’ I think the next two, three, four years, those are all important steps. I know he’s going to be here quite a bit."
Nix took a trip with his wife and quarterback teammates to Mexico right after the season ended, and he later visited Italy with his family. He otherwise spent most of his offseason in Colorado, and the 25-year-old quarterback is refreshed and recharged after allowing his body to recover this spring. Nix and his veteran teammates are set to report for training camp on July 22 ahead of a grueling summer that will lead into a challenging season.
After self-scouting his rookie campaign, Nix knows what he needs to improve going into Year 2. Now we'll see if he can execute that improvement.
