The New York Mets don't look like the same team that owned the NL's top seed earlier this season. They lost the first half of their doubleheader with the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 on Wednesday, good for their fourth straight loss and fifth straight game without at least five runs.
The game was deadlocked at 2-2 until Joey Ortiz hit a grand slam off of reliever Reed Garrett in the sixth, and New York never recovered. Starting pitcher Clay Holmes finished with two runs allowed on three hits in 5.1 innings, while Garrett allowed four runs on three hits in 0.2 frames.
Manager Carlos Mendoza removed Holmes for Garrett with one out and a runner on first in the sixth, along with a 2-1 lead. The starter finished with 90 pitches before the reliever gave up five runs in the frame.
Mendoza explained the decision postgame, via SNY.
"So with that fourth inning, he walked the bases loaded with the three lefties there," he said. "Seemed like he was having a hard time landing the secondaries in the strike zone. "We were up one, he was approaching 90 pitches there."
"Once he walked Yelich to lead off the inning, I knew I was just gonna give him [Jackson] Chourio regardless," he continued. "He got Chourio out, and that was it."

Mets fans aren't pleased on social media.
"Holmes was squeezed in the Yelich at bat, showed zero signs of being gassed," one person said. "I need this mouthpiece out of the dugout."
"This manager doesn’t know what to do every time he does these press conferences," another said. "He has no answers to fixing this team."
"Always an excuse! I want results, that’s what he’s being paid for," another said. "If you can’t do the job, find someone who can!"
"Our bullpen is struggling; let the starters pitch," another said. "Don’t pull the starters until the 7th inning. This quick trigger with starters is killing us, especially since the bullpen is struggling right now."
"It was the wrong decision," another said. "And it cost them the game."
