Commanders' offensive assistant praises Washington's competitive offseason

Washington assistant offensive coach Brian Johnson liked what he saw last week during the Commanders' workouts.
Johnson came over from the Eagles to the Commanders upon being hired to be a part of offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's offensive coaching staff. "It's been a great hunger, enthusiasm, and eagerness to get better each and every day," Johnson told Natalie Spala.

"It's been really competitive, and it's nice to be here when guys know what to do already." Thus, Johnson could see a difference between these workouts and those one year ago, when the team was learning the Kingsbury offense and Joe Whitt's defensive schemes.
With the new rookie class and new veterans added this offseason, Johnson spoke of how these workouts are an opportunity to get to know each other better and learn how they can work together. "It's been exciting starting this process, continuing to refine it, and looking for ways to get better, so I am excited to be here."
Johnson has coached in both the NFL and the NCAA, so he knows the importance of leadership coming from players, and he is pleased to see that leadership in Ashburn as well. "We obviously have a great group of leaders throughout the organization. The mission and the vision is very, very clear. I think one of the things I am most proud of is being able to work extremely hard and have a blast doing it."
Crediting head coach Dan Quinn, Johnson stated, "That is the culture that has been created here, and we are excited to continue to live up to that. There is a lot to be excited about; it's a testament to the culture DQ and AP (GM Adam Peters) have built. These guys work extremely hard; they have a great time doing it. I am looking forward to continued success."
After playing quarterback for Utah and an NFL tryout with the Green Bay Packers, Johnson returned to Utah as the quarterbacks coach. Johnson then coached at Mississippi State (Rebels), Houston (Cougars), Florida (Gators) and Philadelphia Eagles before signing on with the Commanders.
