Could Miami Dolphins target an Arizona Cardinals tight end after trading Jonnu Smith

The Arizona Cardinals have a tight end room they like. They have Trey McBride as their stud pass catcher and then have a rotation of Elijah Higgins and Tip Reiman behind him. They kept Travis Vokolek on the active roster all last season.

With such a deep room, the Cardinals could be the target of phone calls from the Miami Dolphins.

Miami traded tight end Jonnu Smith, cornerback Jalen Ramsey and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

According to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, the Dolphins are in conversations with multiple teams to acquire a tight end.

While the Cardinals certainly would not entertain any talks about McBride, perhaps they would be willing to part with Higgins, allowing Reiman, entering his second season, to play a bigger role in 2025.

Higgins, after all, was originally drafted by the Dolphins in the sixth round in 2023 but did not make the team and the Cardinals claimed him off waivers.

He has been a reliable second option for the last two seasons. He caught 20 passes for 172 yards and two scores in 2024.

If Higgins were to be traded to the Dolpins, Reiman could play an expanded role, and it would open up playing time for Vokolek, who has appeared in three games in two seasons for the Cardinals.

There have been no reports of the Cardinals in such trade talks, but we can see how it might be a possibility.
