The Dallas Mavericks enter the offseason after a disappointing end to the 2024-25 season in the Play-In Tournament, missing the playoffs after reaching the NBA Finals just a year earlier.

With coach Jason Kidd at the helm, Dallas has already overhauled its roster, most notably trading for Anthony Davis and drafting Duke freshman Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft.

On Saturday, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin confirmed that the Mavericks have made another move, this time to retool their coaching staff around the new look roster.

McMenamin revealed that the franchise has added Mike Penberthy, a respected shooting coach and three‑time NBA champion, to Kidd’s staff alongside newly hired lead assistant Frank Vogel.

Penberthy’s arrival comes just days before Flagg makes his professional debut at the Las Vegas Summer League.

After an undrafted stint with the Los Angeles Lakers that culminated in a 2001 NBA title, he spent a decade playing in Europe before transitioning into coaching.

Penberthy began as the Minnesota Timberwolves’ shooting coach in 2014-15 and then worked with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2018-19.

In July 2019, he joined Vogel’s staff in Los Angeles, helping guide the Lakers to their 2020 title in the Orlando bubble.

Since 2022, he’s served as Denver’s shooting coach and pro scout, capturing a third ring with the Nuggets in 2023.

Just days after securing Penberthy, the Mavericks will turn their focus to the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, where Flagg is set to make his first appearance in a Mavericks uniform.

Dallas' full Summer League roster features not only Flagg but also two‑way guards Ryan Nembhard and Miles Kelly, 2024 second‑round pick Melvin Ajinca and 7-foot-5 center Jamarion Sharp.

The Mavericks open play against the Lakers at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, a marquee matchup that pits Flagg against Bronny James.
