New Development on Al Horford’s Warriors-Lakers Decision

Al Horford’s future remains a talking point this offseason as the veteran big man weighs his options between extending his career or potentially retiring.
Following a disappointing ending to the Boston Celtics’ 2024-25 campaign, the 39-year-old center has been linked to a short list of teams still in the market for experienced frontcourt depth, with the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers emerging as the strongest suitors, via ESPN's Brian Windhorst (h/t NBA Central).
Horford’s name had been tied to the Lakers earlier this summer as Los Angeles worked to rebuild its frontcourt around Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
But those rumors cooled quickly on Thursday when ESPN's Shams Charania confirmed that Jaxson Hayes will return to the Lakers on a one-year deal.
Hayes now joins new signing Deandre Ayton to round out the Lakers’ rotation at center, leaving no remaining roster spots, or a need at the five. With two big men locked in, the Lakers have theoretically moved on from the idea of adding Horford to their plans.
As many have pointed out, it now appears Horford’s decision could come down to signing with the Warriors or retiring from the NBA altogether.
Seems like it’s Warriors or retirement for Al Horford.— Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops) July 3, 2025
Should Horford sign with Golden State, his championship experience, reliable shooting, and defensive versatility would be a natural fit in Steve Kerr’s system as the team looks to stay competitive in the loaded Western Conference. However, if he decides to retire, it brings an end to an illustrious 18-year career, culminating in five All-Star nods and a championship.
Horford finished his 2024-25 campaign averaging 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists, while shooting 42.3% from the field in 60 games.
