Packers release CB Jaire Alexander, sending Dolphins social media aflame

Following news on Monday morning that the Green Bay Packers have released veteran cornerback Jaire Alexander, Miami Dolphins' social media was rife with reactions. Alexander, who has injury history, played in just seven games in each of the last two seasons, missing a total of 20. In 2021, Alexander saw just four games of action.

Without being able to find a trade partner for Alexander, who will enter his eighth season in the NFL at age 28, Green Bay cut bait, and the news immediately resonated with Dolphins fans on social media. Miami has their own issues with a veteran cornerback, as Jalen Ramsey will not show up to minicamp, and should be officially off the Dolphins in the next few days or weeks.

While many would welcome the addition of Alexander now that trade compensation doesn’t have to be factored in, the Dolphins do have a young and unproven cornerback group.  However, with Alexander’s medical history, and the seemingly ‘rebuilding’ mindset in Miami, could the Dolphins hold, and simply work with what they have in the room?

That room at this moment, consists of 2023 second-round selection Cam Smith, and nearly half a dozen undrafted free agents from the last few years including slot specialist Kader Kohou and boundary corners in Storm Duck, Ethan Bonner, Isaiah Johnson, and 2025 UDFA BJ Adams. Miami also spent a fifth-round pick on Jason Marshall Jr. and signed veterans Artie Burns, Kendall Sheffield, and Ryan Cooper Jr for camp competition.

Clearly a unit that needs more experience, a player’s best ability is their availability. Alexander is a two-time Pro Bowler from the 2020 and 2022 seasons, and was set to make $37M across the next two seasons if he remained with Green Bay, and his release will cost the Packers $7.5M in 2025 dead cap money, and $9.5M in 2026.

Should Miami general manager Chris Grier make the call to Alexander is anyone’s guess at this time, but social media sounded off across the fan base with varying opinions.
