Padres fans vote overwhelmingly in favor of trading All-Star closer

The San Diego Padres are currently in a postseason spot and are also expected to be buyers at the trade deadline. But, it doesn't mean they couldn't still trade away veterans on expiring deals.

And according to a recent fan poll, Padres fans are ready to move on from one of their pitchers on an expiring deal. According to SB Nation's Gaslamp Ball, Padres fans voted overwhelmingly in favor of trading away Robert Suarez at the trade deadline.

In the poll, 78 percent of Padres fans were in favor of trading away Suarez. Ben Fadden of Gaslamp Ball shared his reaction to the fan vote. "Not gonna lie." Fadden wrote, "78% is surprising. I thought it was going to be lower."

The original question posed was whether trading Saurez made sense or not. While not explicitly saying the Padres should trade him, the majority of Padres fans are more than understanding of why trading him works.

Suarez is 34 years old, and at the start of the 2026 season, will be 25. Not only is he older, but he's also struggling this season after a strong start. He has a 4.04 ERA on the year, despite having an MLB-best 24 saves.

This happened due to Suarez having a rough month of June until now. He has a 7.94 ERA since June 1st, and has only blown one save in that timeframe. His struggles began on June 14th, when he allowed five earned runs in one outing.

Since that June 14th disaster, he has a 16.88 ERA, a 1-3 record, and three saves to just one blown save. While he's struggled lately, Suarez still has a solid history in his career.

In 2024, Suarez was an All-Star with a 2.77 ERA in 65 games. He had 36 saves and had an impressive 9-3 record. His performance as a reliever for the Padres over the years has been solid.

While he's had his struggles lately, he'd still be a decent piece on a Padres roster looking to make a postseason push. Instead, in the eyes of fans, it'd make sense to trade him. He's in the final year of his deal, and the Padres might not re-sign him due to his age and his struggles recently.

Instead of letting him walk for nothing, landing a return is worth it in the eyes of 78 percent of Padres fans who participated in the poll. While a surprisingly high percentage, it's a move that would make sense.

Regardless of whether the Padres are contenders or not, moving Suarez at the deadline would be a smart move from an organizational standpoint, especially if A.J. Preller and the front office aren't intending to re-sign Suarez in the offseason.
