Manny Machado did not hold back after another tense chapter in the San Diego Padres–Los Angeles Dodgers rivalry, delivering a pointed message to Los Angeles in the wake of Fernando Tatis Jr.’s latest injury scare.
The drama unfolded in the ninth inning of the Padres’ recent game against the Dodgers, when Tatis was hit on the hand by a pitch — his third time being plunked by Los Angeles this season. Tempers quickly flared, benches emptied, and a war of words broke out between Padres’ manager Mike Shildt and Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts.

Tatis left the game with a hand injury and was sent for X-rays and an MRI. Although the X-rays came back negative, Machado was not satisfied with the outcome.
“Let’s just hope the CT scan [on Tatis’ hand] comes back negative,” Machado told reporters after the game. “[The Dodgers] gotta pray it comes back negative tomorrow.”
Machado didn’t elaborate further, but his words left little to the imagination. It was a clear warning — and a signal that the Padres have had enough of seeing their star shortstop hit.
That sentiment was echoed by Shildt, who emphasized that his teams “don’t take anything,” vowing not to back down. The incident capped a heated series in which eight batters were hit by pitches and tensions boiled over twice.
With the two teams not meeting again until mid-August, emotions will have plenty of time to simmer. But if Machado’s sharp message is any indication, the Padres plan to remember what happened, and they’ll be ready the next time they face the Dodgers.
