The John Deere Classic in Illinois is officially underway, and after a stellar opening round on Thursday, Doug Ghim leads the field at 9-under par, holding a one-shot advantage heading into Friday.

However, the tournament has already experienced several withdrawals. Four players pulled out before the event began, and German standout Stephan Jaeger exited after a 3-over par showing in the first round. Now, the PGA Tour has announced yet another withdrawal during the beginning of the second round.

Andrew Putnam has reportedly withdrawn from the tournament due to an apparent back injury.

He shot even-par on Thursday, giving himself a fighting chance to make the cut. But after carding a 39 on his first nine holes Friday — putting him at 3-over with just nine holes remaining — his odds of advancing were slim, and he ultimately opted to pull out of the event.

Fans reacted to Putnam's unexpected withdrawal:

"Would've been nice to know before the tournament," a fan said.

Another fan posted, "Andrew putnum trying to make the cut? 'No I won't... cause I quit."

Someone else added, "If the PGAT is going to take millions promoting gambling on it's tournaments there should be fines handed down to players who WD mid round!"

Andrew Putnam has competed in 230 professional events on the PGA Tour, making the cut an impressive 144 times.

Since joining the tour in 2015, he has recorded one victory, four runner-up finishes, one third-place finish, and 14 total top-five finishes. He has also landed inside the top 25 on 55 occasions. Putnam’s lone win came back in 2018, and he is currently ranked No. 124 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
