Red Sox trade star player after sweep, and Yankees fans erupt with relief originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Just hours after the Red Sox handed the Yankees their first sweep of the season — and their most impotent offensive series in over a century — Boston pulled off a shocking trade that sent their slugging third baseman Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

The move sent Red Sox Nation into a daze. Yankees fans? Straight to the victory parade.

On a weekend where New York didn’t lead a single inning and was held to four runs or fewer in all three games — something that hadn’t happened in a Yankees-Red Sox series since 1922 — the Devers trade hit like a cosmic do-over.

“Wow thank you @SFGiants, we don’t need to see this guy anymore,” one fan posted on Twitter. “Looks like free dubs at Fenway going forward 😄.”

Another summed it up perfectly: “We got swept and we still somehow won today! Gerrit Cole you’re free!”

Devers has long been one of the Yankees’ biggest headaches, especially for Cole. Entering this weekend, he owned a .350 average and eight home runs off New York’s ace. By the time the dust settled Sunday night, Yankees Twitter was practically printing him a plane ticket.

“I guess he should have at least CONSIDERED playing 1B,” one fan joked — a nod to Devers' refusal to try playing first base after Tristan Casas was hurt and knocked out for the season.

“Why couldn’t they have done that before the game #RepBX,” another groaned, still clearly salty from the sweep but lightened by the aftershock.

Others were more direct:

Even in a weekend full of pain, Yankees fans found a silver lining — and it wore orange and black.

As one fan tweeted, “Gerrit Cole has to be the happiest man alive right now. LFG!”
