Red Sox Turn Heads With Rafael Devers Post Before Giants Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Sunday was a strange and dramatic day for the Boston Red Sox. They wrapped up a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees with a 2-0 win, improving to 37-36 and closing the gap to 6.5 games behind New York in the AL East.

Rafael Devers led the way, hitting his 15th home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth to give Boston a 2-0 lead, the same score they’d hold to the end.

But what followed the game shocked fans across Major League Baseball: the Red Sox traded Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a stunning move that few saw coming.

What raised even more eyebrows was the Red Sox’s celebratory social media post just before the trade was announced:

“Raffy's 500th career XBH is a homer!”

Fans on social media were quick to react, expressing everything from disbelief to outrage:

"Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy it happened," posted some social media user here.

This fan is not thrilled about the trade: "Hits HR, trades for bad pitchers."

Someone else pointed out: "Then you trade him..."

"Your team is a disgrace. What a bad move," posted another fan in disbelief.

This fan added: "And now he is gone."

"Front office of the @RedSox is a DISGRACE!! You literally got NOTHING for him!!! Nothing!!! Betts 2.0," posted another user.

Devers, a cornerstone of Boston's offense and a fan favorite, had been hitting .272 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs on the season. The Red Sox traded him to the Giants for right-hander Jordan Hicks, left-hander Kyle Harrison, and a pair of prospects: outfielder James Tibbs and right-hander Jose Bello.

Notably, Boston isn’t retaining any of the $254.5 million still owed to Devers over the next eight years.

It's a massive deal for both franchises. San Francisco adds one of the best left-handed bats in the league, while Boston appears to be shifting into a new phase—whether that's rebuilding or retooling remains to be seen.

The Red Sox are facing the Giants in a three-game weekend series starting Friday. First, they head to Seattle for a three-game series.
