Vote: Who should be Register-Guard high school boys Athlete of the Year?

The 2024-25 high school sports season is in the books, and athletes from the Eugene-Springfield area delivered no shortage of electric performances throughout the year.

Now, we want you to decide which local star was the best of the bunch.

Nominees for Register-Guard boys Athlete of the Year are:

The Lancers junior earned 5A first-team all-state honors at linebacker and was named the Midwestern League defensive player of the year after helping his team to the state quarterfinals.

The Lions senior won the Class 4A 3,000-meter state title with a personal-best time of 8 minutes, 26.4 seconds — the second-fastest time by a 4A runner in state history — at Hayward Field. He took second in the 1,500 (4:01.54).

In the fall, Bengston won his second consecutive state cross-country title with a 5,000-meter time of 15:39.4 at Lane Community College. He was also an all-league defender for Cottage Grove's soccer team, which reached the state quarterfinals.

The standout junior was a first-team all-state linebacker for Marist Catholic and helped lead the Spartans to the 4A state title. In the winter, Buzzard captured his third straight 3A wrestling title for the Eagles, this time winning the 175-pound crown.

Buzzard, who transferred to Marist as a sophomore, wrestles for his former school, Harrisburg, because the Spartans do not have a wrestling program.

The Colts senior was named the Midwestern League co-player of the year and earned 5A first-team all-state honors.

The Irish senior won his second consecutive Class 6A triple jump state title with a mark of 48-10 3/4 at Hayward Field. Forsha also took second in the long jump (22-10 1/2).

Marist's senior quarterback was named the 4A offensive player of the year and earned first-team all-state honors after helping lead the Spartans to the state title with a 30-6 win over Henley.

In the winter, Hudson earned first-team all-league recognition after helping Marist reach the state playoffs.

In the spring, Hudson took sixth place at the state golf championships with a two-day score of 158 to help the Spartans to a second-place team finish at Takatee Golf Club in Blue River.

The Colts junior was named the Midwestern League player of the year and earned 5A second-team all-state honors after helping Thurston to the state quarterfinals.

The Spartans' senior was named the Sky Em League player of the year and earned 4A all-state honors after helping Marist Catholic reach the state playoffs.

The Spartans junior won his second straight Class 4A state singles title with a 6-3, 6-0 win in the final at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

South Eugene’s Jahan Sabzalian moved the ball against Willamette. Sabzalian was voted to the 6A all-state first team.

The Axe senior was named the Southwest Conference co-player of the year and earned 6A first-team all-state honors after helping South Eugene to the second round of the state playoffs.

Thurston freshman Lukas Salas-Sanchez won the 106-pound Class 5A state title by technical fall at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland to help his team to a second-place team finish.

The Colts sophomore won the 113-pound Class 5A state title by technical fall at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland to help his team to a second-place team finish.

The Colts junior was named the Class 5A state co-player of the year and was tabbed as the Midwestern League player of the year after helping Thurston reach the state title game. Saunders is an Oregon State commit.

The Irish senior was named the Southwest Conference player of the year and earned 6A honorable mention all-state recognition after helping Sheldon reach the state playoffs.

The star running back and linebacker earned all-state honors on both sides of the ball and was named the 6A defensive player of the year after helping lead the Irish to the state semifinals.

Tuioti is a three-star recruit who has signed to play at Boise State next season.
