With Dolphins now seeking TE help, could Rams be a viable trade partner?

The Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off the week with a blockbuster trade on Monday, swapping Jalen Ramsey for Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Dolphins also sent Jonnu Smith to the Steelers in a late-round pick swap, moving on from their top tight end and one of their primary playmakers.

Shortly after dealing away Smith, it was reported that the Dolphins are now in talks with multiple teams about trading for a tight end. No specific teams were mentioned, but it would make sense if the Rams were involved in these discussions.

After drafting Terrance Ferguson in the second round, some of their other tight ends have become expendable. For one, Colby Parkinson could be a logical trade candidate. According to Over The Cap, he has a cap hit of $9.8 million this year but if the Rams were to trade him, they would save $7.75 million in cap room, leaving behind only $2.1 million in dead money.

Considering he’s likely to be No. 3 on the Rams’ depth chart, trading him should at least warrant some consideration. Davis Allen is another potential trade chip in Los Angeles, though moving him wouldn’t be for financial purposes. He only has a cap hit of $1.1 million this year, with a potential savings of $1.03 million if he’s traded.

Trading Allen, a former fifth-round pick from 2023, would mostly be about acquiring draft capital in return – assuming the Rams aren’t keen on keeping him around.

The Rams have already said Tyler Higbee will be back this year and he’s now healthy after undergoing surgery on his knee and shoulder last offseason, but might they consider moving him? He has an $8.8 million cap hit and will be a free agent next offseason, so his long-term outlook is murky – especially being 32 years old and with his replacement already on the roster.

Trading Higbee would save the Rams $6.7 million in cap room this year, but he’s such an integral part of the offense and locker room that it’s hard to imagine him being moved before the season. Still, it can’t be ruled out.

The Rams never close the door on anything and a trade involving a tight end shouldn’t surprise anyone, especially if the Dolphins are motivated to find a replacement for Smith. Considering the Rams and Dolphins already had talks about Ramsey, it’s reasonable to think they might’ve talked about a tight end deal, too.
