3 biggest holes on Commanders' roster ahead of training camp

The Washington Commanders are kicking training camp off in just a few short days. This is an exciting time, because it's a chance for us to see the team on the field in pads, and it signifies the start of the season being right around the corner.

The Commanders' roster has undergone some big changes this offseason. The team added a ton of talent in free agency and brought in some interesting rookies, so it will be exciting to see who stands out at camp. However, it's obviously hard to fix everything in one offseason, so the Commanders still have some notable roster holes.

Today, we're going to identify the three biggest holes on this roster ahead of camp.

Wide Receiver

The Commanders still have Terry McLaurin, who's a reliable WR1. The problem is, not much was added to the room this offseason, and the depth is concerning. Any time you have to rely on a rookie third-round pick to play a large role immediately, that's not ideal.

The Commanders are in that position, though, as they are set to turn to rookie Antonio Williams as the starter opposite McLaurin. Can Luke McCaffrey, Dyami Brown, or Jaylin Lane step up and play a larger role? Will Treylon Burks turn into a solid starter? It would be nice if the team had one more reliable veteran, like Deebo Samuel from last year.

Center

The Commanders made the questionable decision to move on from starting center Tyler Biadasz this offseason. That would have been understandable if there were an obvious replacement in mind, but the Commanders didn't add a free agent.

Instead, the only addition to the center room was rookie center Matt Gulbin. Nick Allegretti is the favorite to start, but he didn't even get enough snaps in 2025 to receive a PFF grade. As a result, the Commanders are going with an unproven option either way.

Secondary

The Commanders have a lot of new blood in the secondary. Nick Cross was brought in to play strong safety, Amik Robertson to play nickelback, and Rasul Douglas and Ahkello Witherspoon to be depth options on the outside.

The thing is, the depth isn't great, especially at safety. Will Harris wasn't great at free safety in 2025, and the team didn't bring in any competition at the position. We've covered Quan Martin's struggles. The depth behind Cross at strong safety isn't great either, with special teams ace Jeremy Reaves and former UDFA Robert McDaniel the current options.

It seems like the Commanders also agreed their secondary depth wasn't great, considering they just brought in Douglas this month. The starters could be okay here, but any injuries and things are going to look scary.
