For many NFL stars, walking away from the game is difficult. Walking away from $30 million is almost unimaginable. But for former Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, the decision to retire had nothing to do with money and everything to do with losing the passion that fueled one of the greatest careers in NFL history.

Donald recently explained that his decision to retire came after realizing he no longer had the desire to dedicate himself to the demanding lifestyle required to remain an elite player.

“I felt like I didn’t have the passion to train all year around anymore. I didn’t have the passion to think about playing 17 games and all the work that I gotta put into it,” Donald said.

Rather than continuing to play simply because of the financial reward, Donald admitted he knew it was time to step away.

Donald explains why no amount of money could keep him in the NFL

“I lost that passion to do that. So I lost the passion to play football, so it was time for me to walk away from it.”

Donald’s comments were echoed by former NFL running back LeSean McCoy, who shared a conversation the two had shortly after the retirement decision.

“We go to dinner and we just talking, we vibing,” McCoy recalled. “He’s the first non-quarterback to make $30 million in a year. People don’t do that.”

McCoy admitted he couldn’t believe what Donald told him next.

“We’re talking and I’m like, ‘Yo man, it’s crazy that you’re retiring.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah man, I just wanted to be fair to the team, so I gave the $30 million back.’”

The revelation left McCoy stunned.

“I’m sitting there like, ‘This dude just said he gave up $30 million.’ You could easily go on there for camp, pull a hamstring, and get that 30 piece. That’s when you know you’re rich.”

For Donald, however, the decision wasn’t about proving a point or making a financial statement. It was about being honest with himself and the Rams organization. Rather than collecting a massive paycheck without fully committing to the work, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year chose to walk away knowing his heart was no longer in the game.

His decision serves as a rare reminder that, for even the highest-paid athletes, passion—not money—is often the greatest motivator.
