Argentina didn't get a shot on goal against Spain in World Cup final

Spain put the clamps on Argentina.

There will be no repeat World Cup champion after Spain defeated Argentina in the final on Sunday, July 19 to win the title in a thrilling 1-0 result.

It was a match that pit La Roja against the stellar attack of Lionel Messi and company, with a big storyline of whether Spain's tough defense could handle the overwhelming offense of Argentina.

Turns out, Argentina faced a brick wall. It didn't register a single shot against Spain in the first 90 minutes, the first time a team failed to get a shot attempt in regulation time in World Cup final history.

Argentina was able to get its first shot attempt late in the second half of extra time, after Spain scored, but it was unable to get a shot on goal in the 120-plus minutes of action inside MetLife Stadium.

Messi and Giuliano Simeone were the only Argentina players to record a shot attempt.

On the other hand, Spain's attack overwhelmed the opposition with a whopping 20 shot attempts, 12 of which were on goal. None of them were finding the back of the net, but that all changed in the 106th minute, when Ferran Torres broke the scoreless draw in extra time for what ended up being the game-winning goal.

It capped off a dominant run for Spain, who gave up just one goal in the eight matches it played to become World Cup champion, a record. It was also the second time the Spaniards were able to keep an opponent from registering a shot on goal this tournament, after it did so against Austria in the round of 32.

Spain is also now the first team to keep an opponent from getting a shot on goal twice in the knockout rounds of the same World Cup.
