Argentina vs. Spain storylines to watch
- Spain has only won the World Cup title once in 2010, and it’s looking to go 2-for-2 in its only appearances in the World Cup Final.
- Only two teams have won back-to-back titles: Italy (1934, 1938) and Brazil (1958, 1962). Argentina can become the third after beating France in penalties in 2022.
- All of Argentina’s wins in the knockout stage have come via scores after the 75th minute, with two coming in extra time. If Spain grabs an early lead, don’t count Argentina out.
- This is likely Lionel Messi’s final World Cup game. He could go out with two World Cup titles, a Golden Boot title and the World Cup all-time scoring record under his belt with a victory and a goal or two.
- Spain’s defense will be the true X-factor in this one. It’s allowed one goal across the entire tournament against teams like France, Portugal and Belgium, holding stars like Kylian Mbappé and Cristiano Ronaldo scoreless.
Argentina vs. Spain key players to watch
- Lionel Messi, Argentina: Messi has been the catalyst of almost every Argentina opportunity at this World Cup. He has nearly as many goals (eight) as the rest of his teammates combined (10) and also leads the squad with four assists.
- Emiliano Martínez, Argentina: If Argentina wants to win, it needs Martínez to be steady in net. He’s allowed seven goals and made nine saves across seven starts. But with Spain’s lockdown backline, one goal could doom Argentina in this match.
- Lamine Yamal, Spain: Yamal hasn’t wowed in the goal-scoring category across his first World Cup, but he’s still one to watch. The 19-year-old could start off his international career with a World Cup title.
- Mikel Oyarzabal, Spain: You’d expect Yamal to be Spain’s goal leader, but it’s Oyarzabal, who has five thus far. Oyarzabal scored the opening goal against France on Tuesday, the first fallen domino that led to Spain’s win.
