Barcelona forward responds to criticism with game-changing cameo for Spain in Portugal win: ‘In tournaments like this…’

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres delivered an important response to his critics after helping Spain secure a 1-0 victory over Portugal and advance to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

It must be noted that the Barcelona forward has faced intense scrutiny since the start of the tournament, with many questioning his impact for Spain. 

However, the 25-year-old played a vital role after coming off the bench, providing the assist for Mikel Merino’s goal and influencing the game during a crucial stage of the contest.

Ferran Torres highlights Spain’s strength

Spain once again demonstrated the importance of squad depth as substitutes made the difference in a tightly contested encounter against Portugal.

Reflecting on the contribution of the players introduced during the game, Ferran Torres highlighted how decisive squad players can be during major international tournaments.

“Ultimately, in tournaments like this, these matches are decided by the players who come off the bench, and we saw that today. 

“A goal and an assist from the substitutes. Everyone is ready to contribute,” he began, as per Mundo Deportivo.

Ferran explains assist for Mikel Merino goal

One of the defining moments of the match came in the build-up to Spain’s winning goal, with Ferran Torres assist proving crucial in unlocking the Portuguese defence.

The Barcelona forward revealed that he had already anticipated the movement made by Mikel Merino before receiving possession.

Describing the sequence, Ferran said, “Before I received the ball, I already knew Mikel was running.

“I was confident Rodri would pass it to me, and when I controlled it, the ball bounced up a little, but I waited and played it to Mikel.”

With Spain now through to the World Cup quarter-finals, attention has shifted towards the next challenge awaiting Luis de la Fuente’s side.

Speaking about the upcoming opponents, Ferran stressed the importance of maintaining focus.

“At this stage, all the opponents are very tough. We have to stay focused on ourselves, and whoever we face, we’ll have to take them on with great enthusiasm and determination,” he concluded.
