Bryson DeChambeau finally breaks silence after being given a two-shot penalty at The Open
Bryson DeChambeau remains in contention to win The Open Championship despite his controversial penalty.
DeChambeau received a two-shot penalty shortly after his second round, having been adjudged to have improved the area of backswing during a shot on the fifth hole.
So rather than being one shot behind leader Lucas Herbert, the American will enter the third round three shots back.
Unsurprisingly, DeChambeau is not happy with the decision at The Open Championship, and has now shared his disappointment on social media.
Bryson DeChambeau fired up by two-shot penalty at The Open
DeChambeau threatened to quit The Open after the incident, but he has now confirmed his decision to stay at Royal Birkdale.
He posted on X: “Obviously disappointed with the ruling.
“I don’t agree with it, but it is what it is.
“This fires me up.
“Onto the weekend.
“Let’s get it.”
The LIV Golf superstar also posted several images on his Instagram, adding the caption: “Onto the weekend…”
Some were genuine, but two clearly fake images actually poked fun at the decision, comprising DeChambeau hovering above the grass that he was accused of trampling to improve his lie.
Bryson DeChambeau can make golfing history if he wins The Open
It’s quite the response from DeChambeau, who certainly left it late to confirm he will remain in the competition.
He now turns his focus to another big day at Royal Birkdale, where he will play alongside fellow American Sam Burns.
Burns is chasing his maiden major win, while two-time major champion DeChambeau could make golfing history should he come out on top.
As per Justin Ray, no player in the modern era has missed the cut in the first three majors of the season before winning the fourth.
The LIV man can, of course, achieve that feat, having failed to make the weekend at The Masters, the PGA Championship and the US Open earlier this year.
Whether or not the controversy impacts him positively or negatively remains to be seen, with his anger only going to intensify if the latter plays out across the weekend in Southport.
