Bury abruptly resigns as Immaculata softball coach after 8 seasons

Gary Bury, who spent the past eight seasons as the head softball coach at Immaculata High School, told MyCentralJersey.com on Friday morning that he is stepping down as the Spartans’ skipper, effective immediately, citing a difference in vision with the administration.

Bury took over the helm in 2019, building the struggling program back into a local power, leading a run that saw Immaculata post 16 or more victories in each of the past three seasons.

The Spartans also claimed the 2024 and 2025 Somerset County Tournament championships, despite being underdogs. That included winning the 2025 title as the No. 6 seed with a freshman pitcher. They were the program’s first county titles since 2007.

Bury, who departs with a 90-79 record at the Somerville school, said,repeated calls and texts to athletics director Tom Gambino looking to discuss the immediate future of the program have gone unanswered since mid-June, thus he hasn’t had an opportunity to inform the school of his decision to resign.

“During the latter stages of last season and continuing through the summer, I have concluded the administration does not share the same vision nor the passion that I do for the Immaculata High School softball program,” Bury explained. “With that said, I am stepping down as head coach, effective immediately. I want to thank my former and current players who helped turn this program around.”

Gambino, upon receiving the news, had no comment.
