Chiefs officially place 2 players on the PUP list

On Friday — as the Kansas City Chiefs saw their rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans report to training camp — head coach Andy Reid offered a run down of the team’s injury situation.

On Saturday, the team made a pair of transactions that largely lined up with the coach’s predictions.

As expected, second year defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott was placed on the Active/Physically-Unable-to-Perform (PUP) list. Norman-Lott is continuing his recovery from an ACL tear suffered in Week 7 last season.

Norman-Lott is joined by rookie tight end John Michael Gyllenborg. Reid revealed on Friday that Gyllenborg has a knee sprain that is still being evaluated.

Placing players on the Active/PUP list does not create openings on the 90-man roster. Players are eligible to be activated at any time when cleared to practice. If they remain on the PUP list at the end of camp, they can be moved to the Reserve/PUP list to start the season — but the players would be ineligible for at least the first four games.

Reid expressed optimism on Friday that Norman-Lott would participate later in camp.

“Somewhere in training camp, potentially, he’ll be out there,” the coach predicted. “We’ve just got to keep the strength part of it coming with him.”

All signs are encouraging for the team’s other known injured players.

Reid stated on Friday that quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wideout Rashee Rice have been cleared following knee surgeries and would be participating. He also revealed that rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane was having his final physical on Friday after a shoulder injury suffered in the offseason program.

Delane was seen on Saturday walking to the team’s first rookie practice wearing a yellow, noncontact jersey. He was holding his helmet, implying he would be participating in the day’s session. Delane is tentatively scheduled to speak after Saturday’s practice.
