Chiefs rookie Peter Woods is comfortable at 308 – 313 pounds in camp
The Kansas City Chiefs’ first practice of training camp consisted solely of rookies, quarterbacks and select veterans, as it will for the next two days before the full team gets together for practice on Wednesday, July 29th.
After the first day of practice, rookie defensive lineman Peter Woods, the No. 29 pick in this year’s draft, stood at the podium and answered questions from reporters. He was excited for camp to get rolling, and talked about how he felt physically.
“I’m really comfortable,” Woods said. “My weight is like 308 – 313 [pounds]; I want to try to play around 308, so I’m there; I’m ready to go.”
“Camp sweat will get some more off of me,” Woods acknowledged. “So I just have to balance that, make sure I’m eating my meals, stuff like that, so I’m really excited about that and being able to find where my niche is in playing weight.”
When asked about what he can do at that size, an increase in weight from his final year at Clemson, where he questionably played at a sub-300 weight, Woods listed off some enticing keywords.
“Speed. Quickness. Acceleration. Mismatch. So I’m really excited.”
Woods had great energy at the podium on Saturday, glowing with anticipation for the rest of the practices in St. Joe. He will have a lot of eyes on him, especially now that last year’s second-round pick at defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott will start camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.
Woods’ size and athletic profile make him an option to play multiple spots on the defensive front, from the A-gap or nose tackle to the 3-technique position defensive tackle Chris Jones has long played under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Look for No. 99 on the Chiefs’ defensive line this preseason, checking out the movement ability he has at roughly 310 pounds compared to Jones (listed at 310 pounds) and Khyiris Tonga (listed at 335 pounds).
