The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to visit Donald Trump at the White House in a couple of weeks, but the decision to attend has not come without backlash.

Many fans have urged the Dodgers to skip the visit, which is intended to mark their 2025 World Series win, having not been able to visit back in November.

The pressure comes from a cohort of fans who vehemently disagree with the policies of the Trump administration at home and abroad. But it hasn’t been enough to force a rethink.

Now, star pitcher Clayton Kershaw has explained why they’re sticking by their choice.

Clayton Kershaw explains the importance of Dodgers’ White House visit

It’s often said that politics and sports should not mix. In practice, that theory rarely holds up.

We have seen it in the World Cup going on across North America, with off-field drama at every turn.

For the World Series champions, it’s a lose-lose situation. Attend, and there will be criticism. Abstain, and the same will be true.

That’s the logic Kershaw seems to be following. Sleeping Dodgers quoted him as saying: “An incredible honor to get to go see, regardless of who’s in office.

“At the end of the day, getting to go to the White House, see the Oval Office, meet the President, that’s stuff that you can’t lose sight of, no matter what you believe.”

That explanation hasn’t seemed to move the needle for those in opposition. They see it as ignoring the context of what the sitting president has been accused of doing since acquiring office, and continues to do both domestically and in the Middle East.

The discourse doesn’t seem to have made a difference, though. The Dodgers will be heading to Washington DC on the 23rd of July, whether the fans like it or not.
