Commute: SEC Media Day News and Notes on Mizzou

Welcome to the Morning Commute

Today we’re talking about Mizzou Football at SEC Media Days

The unofficial start to the College Football season is here with SEC Media Days. Mizzou took the podium on the first day in Tampa along with Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

And hey, it isn’t SEC Media Days without a snarky comment from Eli Drinkwitz:

I’m sure Big Ten fans will take that well. Anyways, onto Mizzou’s roster updates with a not so positive update on Arizona State transfer Josh Atkins — who will now be out longer than expected after suffering a setback.

We can expect Luke Work, Logan Reichert, or Jack Lange to fill Atkins’ role at the position.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Hardy’s status is improving. He has been medically cleared but still has a timetable of 5-8 weeks to return. More from Josh Matejka.

On the special teams side, Blake Craig is fully recovered from his torn ACL and Florida State transfer Brunno Reus will be on kickoffs.

And remember the rule… if Drink starts talking smack, his team probably isn’t as good. The humbler, the better… at least by our standards of measurement!

Drink talked some smack on Monday … at least on the Big Ten.

As the Tigers prepare for another season under Dawn Sullivan, four former Missouri standouts have each reached significant milestones in recent weeks. Emily Thater, Mychael Vernon and Maya Sands will continue their professional careers in League One Volleyball, while former Tiger Colleen Finney has stepped into a new leadership role away from the court.

Some good updates on former Mizzou Volleyball players! A good piece here from Aaron.

We are incredibly lucky to be able to cover athletics at the University of Missouri, which happens to be home of the world’s best journalism school (it’s a fact). This, along with me working at the J-School, allows us to bring on a host of talented student journalists to become credentialed media members and regularly attend press conferences all season long. Because I also get the chance to sit in on a lot of interviews myself and have the pleasure of reading all of our work at the site as an editor, I decided to added a new category this year— Best Interview. I already had a few specific people in mind who I thought would be worthy candidates, and our writers’ nominations didn’t disappoint. I wasn’t looking for those who seemingly spoke in a way just to go viral on social media— here’s looking at you, Drink — but players and coaches who took time out of their busy days to give thoughtful, and sometimes funny, commentary. These nominees left quite an impression, and I know there are countless others we also could have included.

The latest category of the Rock M’mys is Best Interview — with plenty of great candidates to choose from. So go vote!

According to Drinkwitz, the running back will begin a return-to-play protocol that will take one to two months depending on Hardy’s recovery.

All things considered, this is probably the best possible update on Hardy.

Missouri is not a finished product. The Tigers are entering a new era after a complete roster reset, but Goodman’s first recruiting class shows a clear vision. Instead of chasing a quick rebuild, Missouri is following the same blueprint that has become common among the nation’s top programs.

Looks like the athletic department is investing in the tennis program. Robin Gooman seems like a strong hire.

Her doubles ranking is the highest among any player currently on Missouri’s roster, giving the Tigers an immediate boost as they continue building depth under head coach Robin Goodman.

A big-time addition for Mizzou Tennis’ roster, which is slowly taking shape under a new coach.

We’ve also got the updates on Josh Atkins and Ahmad Hardy.
