Diamondbacks fans can’t believe the pitch Ildemaro Vargas turned into a walk-off

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks fans celebrated not only a dramatic walk-off win Tuesday night, but also the unconventional swing that delivered the decisive hit in the club’s 6-5 victory.

The extra-inning victory was sealed by infielder Ildemaro Vargas, whose single split the Athletics’ third baseman and shortstop to score Gabriel Moreno and salvage what could have been a heartbreaking loss.

Just an inning earlier, the D-Backs led 4-2 before the A’s tied the game on Jacob Wilson’s two-run home run in the ninth. The Athletics then took the lead in the top of the 10th on Jonah Heim’s sacrifice fly, which scored Tyler Soderstrom.

But Arizona answered.

The Diamondbacks loaded the bases before Nolan Arenado delivered a bloop single to score Corbin Carroll from third and tie the game. Although Tim Tawa subsequently struck out, Vargas stepped to the plate and punched a pitch well above the strike zone the other way, sneaking it through the left side of the infield to bring home Gabriel Moreno for the walk-off win.

The unusual approach quickly became one of the night’s biggest talking points among fans. Vargas’ swing immediately sparked reactions across social media, with many praising his bat control and ability to put the ball in play when contact mattered most.

Tuesday’s comeback allowed the Snakes to avoid losing additional ground in the crowded National League wild-card race. Every win — and every loss — has added significance as the regular season enters its most important stretch, with several clubs, including Arizona, battling for one of the final postseason spots.

Many will remember Vargas’ game-winning hit, but it’s the way he delivered it that will make it even more memorable.
