Did the Boston Celtics miss a better return for Jaylen Brown in their hasty trade?
Did the Boston Celtics miss out on a better return for star forward Jaylen Brown in their haste to get a deal done at the start of the month of July? A connected reporter has heard rumbles that this could be the case, but as is the case at this time of the NBA calendar, separating facts from white lies and facts selectively shared with an agenda is as tough as gets in this field.
"I talked to one team that absolutely made an offer to Boston for Jaylen Brown," said senior Sports Illustrated reporter Chris Mannix during a recent interview for the "Ryan Russilo Show". "A good team. They made an offer to Boston."
"And ... I talked to this to a person in that front office after the deal with Philadelphia was consummated, and they were stunned," he added.
"Mostly because they knew their offer wasn't very good, but they told me, this person told me, that the offer would have gotten better," suggested Mannix. "They were probing to see how low can they go. Look, nobody's going to come at you with their best offer right away, especially when the perception is that you're trying to make a deal and you're desperate to get out of there."
Is there a piece of the puzzle we're missing here as to why Boston did not wait for better offers? Almost certainly. Could this tidbit be both true and shared to cast some shade on an opposing front office, especially one that missed out on a deal they'd hope to make with? Certainly. Will we ever learn the answers to any of the above? Stay tuned.
