Dodgers Can’t Complete Sweep, End Road Trip With 3 Series Wins
The Los Angeles Dodgers couldn’t get the job don Sunday, losing by a score of 8-3, but still managed a series win on the road against the New York Mets.
Their series win marked their third since the All-Star break, as well as their third during their nine-game road trip on the East Coast. Prior to winning two games against the Mets, the Dodgers also took two from the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.
Emmet Sheehan made the start for the Dodgers, and had a strong outing following his recent struggles. He lasted five innings on Sunday, allowing just one earned run while striking out five.
The sole run Sheehan allowed came in the bottom of the first inning, as he allowed a double and a single to start his afternoon as the Mets took a 1-0 lead. He allowed another hit the following batter, which was the final knock he allowed on the day.
LA fought back to take the lead in the top of the third inning, as Freddie Freeman capitalized on a leadoff double from Eliezer Alfonzo with a two-base knock of his own. Max Muncy followed Freeman to the plate, and scored Andy Pages with a groundout.
The Dodgers added on in the top of the fourth, as Alfonzo dribbled one down the first base side to bring home Kyle Tucker, making the score 3-1.
After their third run, though, the Dodgers’ offense stagnated, failing to produce a baserunner until the eighth inning. Meanwhile, the Mets brought themselves back into the game and built a sizeable lead. Tyrone Taylor hit a three-run, go-ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 4-3 in favor of the hosts, and the Mets scratched four across the following inning to take a five-run lead.
LA’s offense fell short with a bases-loaded opportunity in the eighth inning, and struck out three times in the ninth inning to end their chances of securing a season series sweep over the Mets.
The Dodgers get a well-deserved off day on Monday as they travel back to the West Coast for their first home series of the second half. They’ll face the Mariners, who have hit a rough patch since the end of the All-Star break. The first game of that series comes Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. PT.
