Dodgers Lose Series Finale in Low Scoring Bout Against Yankees

The Los Angeles Dodgers only allowed two runs in their series finale against the New York Yankees, but couldn’t get the offense going to capitalize on their opportunity to take a sweep in the Bronx.

The Dodgers used their bullpen for the entire game, a liberty afforded to them after Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw a complete game in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader. Los Angeles used seven pitchers during the game, who combined for eight hits, two earned runs and nine strikeouts across eight innings.

Will Klein started the game for the Dodgers, and the Yankees started a two-out rally in the top of the first after a quick two outs from the right-hander. Paul Goldschmidt doubled down the line to start the rally, and Cody Bellinger and Jasson Dominguez both singled to drive home the first run of the game and put Klein in a threatening position.

He managed to get second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. out in the following at-bat, though, limiting the damage.

The game stayed quiet until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Yankees threatened yet again. Jack Dreyer came out to start the inning after closing the fourth, but allowed each of the first three batters of the frame single to load the bases.

Brock Stewart came in to relieve Phillips, and he managed two strikeouts and a popout to escape the jam.

LA levelled the game in the top of the eighth inning, when Tommy Edman came in to pinch hit for second baseman Miguel Rojas. Edman, who has been hot since his return from offseason surgery, took advantage of his opportunity, hitting a solo home run to bring the Dodgers back into the game.

The lead didn’t last long for the Dodgers, as the Yankees regained the lead in the following half inning. Chisholm stepped up with one out, and gave the Yankees the lead with a solo homer of his own. Reliever Evan Phillips allowed two baserunners later in the inning, but managed to escape the frame without any further damage.

The Dodgers went down quietly in the bottom of the ninth, ending their perfect start to the second half of the season.

Their next challenge comes Monday, when they go to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies in a three-game series. The first game of that set comes Monday at 4:10 p.m. PT.
