Early schedule could define Oklahoma's 2026 season

There is no secret that the Oklahoma Sooners face one of the most difficult schedules in college football in 2026. While that would concern most programs, the Sooners believe the challenge can help prepare them for another College Football Playoff run.

Oklahoma has not received the same favorable treatment as its rival, the Texas Longhorns, since joining the SEC. The Longhorns had the second-easiest schedule in the SEC in 2024 and the third-easiest in 2025, according to 247Sports heading into those seasons. Instead, Oklahoma had the toughest schedule in 2024 and the second-toughest in 2025. This season, the Sooners have the second-toughest schedule in college football, according to ESPN's Football Power Index.

Oklahoma faces road game challenges against the Michigan Wolverines, Georgia Bulldogs, Florida Gators and the Missouri Tigers, while having a neutral site game against the Texas Longhorns. The Sooners also face the Ole Miss Rebels and the Texas A&M Aggies at home. Within Oklahoma's first five games, it faces Michigan, Georgia, and Texas. On3's Kaiden Smith believes that stretch will be season-defining.

"My number one question for Oklahoma, I feel great about Oklahoma," Smith said. "The only thing that worries me is the order of the schedule. We're going to find out very quickly, no matter what we hear from media days, what the Sooners are made of because you have games against Michigan, games against Georgia, and Red River within the first 5 weeks of the season."

Oklahoma's 2026 schedule leaves little room for error, but it also provides an opportunity for the Sooners to prove they are among the nation's elite. If Brent Venables' team can survive the early gauntlet against Michigan, Georgia and Texas, it could build the confidence needed for another deep postseason run.

The schedule may be difficult, but for a program with College Football Playoff aspirations, these are the types of challenges that ultimately define championship contenders.
