‘End Of an Era’ – Soccer World Reacts as Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms His Last FIFA World Cup Appearance
There’s only one trophy that has eluded the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo throughout his career. He has never won the FIFA World Cup, but he has a chance to change that, starting with tomorrow’s clash against European champions Spain.
The Portugal captain confirmed to Fabrizio Romano ahead of Monday’s Round of 16 clash that this tournament will be his last. He didn’t beat around the bush and explained clearly that he will not be around for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Soccer World Reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Announcement
Ronaldo confirmed the news during a recent press conference, as revealed by insider Fabrizio Romano. “Yes, it’s my last one. Let’s go and enjoy it,” Ronaldo said.
The news has understandably left soccer fans heartbroken. Manchester United fan and soccer content creator ‘Kobi’ wrote on X, “I knew it would happen one day, but I never thought it would hit this hard.”
We all know every player’s retirement is inevitable, but it certainly hits harder than we would have expected to know that one of the greatest players we’ve ever seen will not be suiting up for the World Cup once again in his career.
Another X user wrote, “One last ride for the king. Ronaldo’s final World Cup. Let’s enjoy every moment.”
Another soccer fan wrote, “The last dance,” which sums up Ronaldo’s last appearance in this year’s tournament.
‘FCB Lad’ wrote, “End of an era.. Enjoy it while it lasts King.”
Another user wrote a heartfelt note as well, “Legendary career, CR7. Thank you for all the unforgettable moments and inspiration over the years. Let’s make this final World Cup one to remember.”
Ronaldo would certainly look to go all the way this year to make his final tournament count. Portugal’s route to the final looks harder than ever if they manage to beat Spain tomorrow.
The last time Portugal faced Spain was in June 2025 in the UEFA Nations League Final, when Ronaldo even scored a goal. The Portuguese walked away with another Nations League trophy after beating Spain on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
What’s interesting is that the last time Ronaldo faced Spain in the World Cup was in 2018, when he famously scored a hat-trick, and an iconic free-kick that had David de Gea rooted to the ground.
Fans would be hoping he would pull a rabbit out of the hat once again, and Portugal can beat Luis de la Fuente’s men.
Ronaldo turns 42 in February. He has 146 international goals in 232 appearances for Portugal. He has won a European Championship, two UEFA Nations League titles, and 11 World Cup goals.
The World Cup is the one trophy missing from a career that defied every ceiling put in its path. Whether Portugal can give him that send-off in the final few games that remain is the question that will define the final chapter of one of sport’s most extraordinary careers.
