England coach Thomas Tuchel claims credit for bringing Harry Kane to Bayern Munich

England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the World Cup came in what was arguably one of the most exciting games of the tournament thus far. Harry Kane’s penalty was what sealed the win for the Three Lions, as they progress to the quarterfinals. Following the victory, England’s head coach Thomas Tuchel was asked about his skipper, to which he recounted a story about his short-lived stint at Bayern Munich.

Expressing his admiration and gratitude, Tuchel said, “When I was at Bayern, I’m still glad that I fought the fight to bring [Kane] to Bayern Munich against some other opinions.”

Roll back the tape…

Tuchel clearly takes shots at honorary club president Uli Hoeneß, who was quite vocal about his opinion on the transfer at the time.

Hoeneß much rather preferred spending that money on Randal Kolo Muani, and it was a publicized power struggle between Tuchel and the club’s bosses, who wanted Kane.

Hoeneß even came close to accidentally sabotaging the transfer by delivering one of his classic interviews that weren’t very kind to Tottenham Hotspur.

Now while Hoeneß has quite clearly come to appreciate the transfer, having called it “the best transfer [the club] has ever made,” Tuchel isn’t entirely wrong in claiming credit for the transfer. Tuchel did indeed recognize that Kane’s unbelievable talent would fit perfectly with the Rekordmeister’s playstyle and found it worth challenging the supervisory board for, a fiasco that likely weakened their relationship and could have played a role in his eventual firing.

While it didn’t work out too well in his first season here under Tuchel, the transfer has indeed been one that significantly elevated the team.

Tuchel claiming credit may seem silly, but his subtle shot at Uli Hoeneß and the supervisory board does have reason and weight to it. Uli has often done the same in recent months, most notably prior to the FIFA World Cup.

Furthermore, far too often has Hoeneß’s general disapporaval or lack of information been a barrier to signing a player at Bayern. Micheal Olise’s signing comes to mind — a player who Hoeneß was largely unaware of. Tuchel clearly still seems to harbour his frustration.

Regardless, England look to face Norway in am exciting clash as the former continue their drawn out quest to bring football home. What did you think of Tuchel’s statement? Will Uli respond? Well, yhe latter is more of a rhetorical question. Tell us everything in the comments below!
