Everybody wants to replicate Grace Kim's incredible shot at Evian ... except Grace Kim

You know you’ve done something legendary when people try to replicate that feat.

That’s the case for Grace Kim, who had an incredible hole-out shot to keep alive a playoff that eventually resulted in a victory over Jeeno Thitikul at the Amundi Evian Championship last year. It’s been talked about a lot and the video replayed often.

Anyone who plays at Evian Resort Golf Club can try to replicate it, and they have a reminder of that shot in the form of a plaque on a tree at the par-5 18th near where the heroics happened.

Kim enjoyed seeing it as the LPGA Tour plays in the major—the fourth of the season—in France this week.

“I saw it for the first time yesterday and it was really cool,” Kim said in a press conference Wednesday. “And hearing those people that come to play Evian and trying it out themselves, kind of makes me feel nice about it.

“It is a very cool thing for Evian Resort to put up for it, so I'm really grateful for it. It makes me feel like it’s a legendary moment, so I'm really, really grateful for that.”

Last year in the final round, the 25-year-old Australian eagled the 72nd hole to force force the playoff. On the next try at the 18th, she hit her approach shot in the water, which figured to be the dagger in her chance to win her first major. But after the penalty, Kim holed out from the grass just over rocks for birdie to match Thitikul. The players returned to 18 again, and, remarkably, Kim produced another eagle to win the title.

Currently ranked No. 31 in the world, Kim posed for a picture with the new brown plaque, which is written in English and French. It reads: “From here, Grace Kim chipped in for birdie on her way to an incredible victory on the second playoff hole in 2025.”

She has good feelings being back in France. And why not?

“Driving in kind of made me think of all the memories that were created last year and obviously all great memories, so it is really nice to be back here in Evian,” Kim said. “It's quite warm this week, which is nice as well. Driving in kind of felt weird in a way but in a good way. Playing the golf course, I have seen the whole course now. There are some differences on the golf course, especially 18. We'll see how this works but definitely makes the hole trickier than it already was.”

The course underwent a months-long renovation on several holes, including the 18th, where two new bunkers were installed. One is on the right side of the fairway, which is a popular tee-shot landing area.

“It makes the fairway a lot tighter than it was last year on 18, but obviously you try to aim for the left for the ball to come back to the middle as the fairway slopes that way,” Kim said. “Off the tee, I don't think it changes too much, but if you end in in the fairway bunker it just forces you to lay up. You can't slack the layup either because of the additional bunker on the left, so just making sure you're switched on throughout the whole hole.”

Those bunkers might affect some decision-making, but it was Kim’s chipping skills that made her unforgettable shot so impressive.

She would love to recreate the celebration that followed, especially with so many of her Aussie friends. But she said the bar is no longer there.

“We went down to the local public [pub], which is apparently burnt down, which I'm really sad about,” Kim said. “We went down and they were all there. I was having a shower, washing off the champagne, and basically by the time I got there they were all pretty drunk. It was all good fun. I was able to get the trophy replica as well as the champagne bottle. I wanted to keep the big bottle. I don't do well with alcohol, so I let the others deal with that. We all filled up the trophy and everyone had a sip and it was such a great time.”

Many golfers have tried to recreate Kim’s shot at 18, and the Ladies European Tour made a social media post recently of the pros trying to pull it off. Even Kim was asked to recreate the shot earlier this week. She declined.

“I ended up not doing it, which I think saved a lot of time and mine as well,” Kim said. “We’ll just leave it at that.”
