Fast & the Furious: Ryan Fox wastes no time winning British Open

SOUTHPORT, England – TV cameras almost missed Ryan Fox’s winning putt at the final hole of the 154^th British Open. That’s because Fox plays faster than just about any golfer on the planet.

“I was always that way as a kid. I see things fast,” he said. “I was the same when I was playing cricket growing up. I played almost every sport growing up, and tennis I wanted to hit the ball hard, and cricket I wanted to hit the ball hard. Everything just happened fast. I was never methodical at anything, to be honest, and it just carried over into golf.”

It's refreshing to see a pro waste no time. It's reminiscent of another Open champion at Royal Birkdale, Lee Trevino.Fox played in the final pairing alongside Sam Burns, who also is on the speedy sign, and they spent a lot of time waiting. But Fox kept to his routine.

“It's not that difficult to pick a shot and pick a club. I get in there, and it all happens quick,” he said. “It's always going to be between one or two clubs into a green, and I just see the shot quickly, pick a shot quickly, and the less time I have to think about it, the less bad stuff can creep in there.”

Fox recalled playing with Scottie Scheffler, the 2025 Open champion, earlier in the year at the WM Phoenix Open in a threesome on Saturday. “We walk off the ninth tee, and he goes, ‘Foxy, it doesn't even feel like you're in the group. It just feels like we're playing in a two-ball, you hit it so fast. It's just in the air,’ ” Fox recounted.

“I can't work out if this was a burn or a compliment,” he said.

Asked if he’s ever caddied for a faster player, Fox’s caddie, Dean Smith, said, “No, because there isn’t a faster player.”

But Fox disagreed. He can remember one player, Italian Renato Paratore, who made him feel like a slow poke. “He used to hit while his name was getting announced on the first tee,” Fox said.
