Ferrari Ready to Debut High-Downforce “Macarena” Rear Wing at Hungarian GP

The 2026 Formula 1 regulations introduced a dramatic new era of active aerodynamics, and no team pushed the boundaries quite like Scuderia Ferrari. Their radical rear wing design, which mechanically rotates up to 270 degrees on the straights to shed drag, was quickly dubbed the “Macarena” wing by the paddock.

Now, as the grid heads to the tight and twisting Hungaroring, Ferrari is reportedly rolling out a major evolution of this concept.

According to Italian motorsport outlet AutoRacer.it, an updated version of Ferrari’s “Macarena” rear wing is ready and is reportedly set to make its competitive debut in Hungary.

Ferrari’s “Hanger Flap” Solution

The Hungarian Grand Prix is often described as “Monaco without the walls.” The circuit demands maximum aerodynamic grip, meaning straight-line speed is entirely secondary to keeping the rear axle planted through the endless sequence of medium-speed corners.

To meet these extreme downforce demands, Ferrari’s new high-downforce specification features additional “hanger flaps” designed to significantly increase rear load. This specific aerodynamic trick is a concept that rival constructor Mercedes has been actively using since pre-season testing.

By integrating these extra flap elements, Ferrari aims to generate the crucial extra points of downforce needed to stabilize the SF-26 through Budapest’s technical middle sector.

Interestingly, this aggressive upgrade is a highly targeted development. The report notes that this update is aimed entirely at extracting the maximum possible performance from the current SF-26 chassis, rather than being a foundational concept that will carry over into next season.

This approach signals that Maranello is refusing to compromise on their current campaign. Rather than shifting resources entirely to future cars, the team is willing to spend their development budget on highly specialized, track-specific solutions to maximize their points haul at one of the calendar’s most aerodynamically demanding circuits.
