Former NMSU star quarterback Diego Pavia waived by Baltimore Ravens
Diego Pavia's brief run with the Baltimore Ravens is over.
The former New Mexico State quarterback was waived by Baltimore on Thursday, July 23, six days before the start of its training camp on July 29. The move comes three months after Pavia accepted a rookie minicamp offer from the Ravens, then signed an undrafted free agent contract with them.
Pavia was competing to be Baltimore's third-string quarterback behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley. The Ravens' news team reported that Pavia was waived to make room for NFL veteran center Ethan Pocic, whose signing was made official on Thursday morning.
Pavia went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, likely due to concerns about his size. His 5-foot-10 frame would've made him one of the NFL's shortest quarterbacks had he made Baltimore's final 53-man roster. Whether he gets another opportunity to make a roster in the NFL or any professional football league remains to be seen.
Pavia played NM State in 2022 and 2023. He guided the Aggies to two winning seasons, including a 2022 Quick Lane Bowl victory, and registered 5,856 total yards and 52 total touchdowns. Pavia had a tremendous 2023 season with NM State, which included a 2023 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year honor, a second-team All-CUSA selection, the Aggies' second-ever 10-win season and an appearance in the CUSA Championship Game.
He transferred to Vanderbilt after the 2024 season to follow former Aggies coach Jerry Kill and former Aggies offensive coordinator Tim Beck. Pavia became a two-time All-SEC selection with the Commodores and was a Heisman Trophy Finalist, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award recipient and the Sporting News' College Football Player of the Year in 2025.
Pavia was one of 12 former NM State players to earn an NFL opportunity this year, with some others being tight end Eli Stowers, running backs Seth McGowan and Mike Washington Jr., linebacker Keyshaun Elliott and offensive lineman Shiyazh Pete.
