Giants training camp preview: New look at inside linebacker

In continuing our pre-training camp preview of the New York Giants' roster, we focus on the inside linebacker unit, which has an entirely new look this season.

Gone is Bobby Okereke, a team captain who led the Giants in tackles last year. In the door are several differently talented players.

Here's a quick rundown of the inside linebackers room under new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson.

Inside linebacker coach Frank Bush

The 63-year-old Bush has had a long, well-traveled 40-year career which began as a player for the Houston Oilers in 1985. Bush began his post-playing career as a scout for the Oilers in 1987. In 1992, he began his coaching odyssey, which saw him coach for eight different NFL teams over the last 35 years. He won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos in the late 1990s.

Tremaine Edmunds

The Giants basically swapped out Okereke for Edmunds, signing him to a three-year, $36 million deal in the early days of free agency this past March. He was a former first-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2018 and was named to the Pro Bowl twice in his five seasons there. He moved on to Chicago in 2023 and was released after three seasons with the Bears. He is seen as a fit for the Giants' aggressive style of play and brings loads of postseason experience with him.

Arvell Reese

The Giants selected the Ohio State star with the fifth overall selection in this year's NFL draft. Many experts see him as an outside backer who is best rushing the passer. The Giants, at the moment, have several veteran players who can do that, so they decided to begin Reese's career on the inside, where they say he is just as effective.

Micah McFadden

McFadden was injured in the Giants' season opener last year and was lost for the season. He was coming into his own and was poised for a career year in 2025, which was also his contract year. Bad luck for him. The Giants brought him back on a one-year deal this offseason. If right, McFadden is a solid presence on the inside and is a valuable player to have on both defense and special teams.

Darius Muasau

Another solid performer on both defense and special teams. Muasau is the perfect backup linebacker/special teamer that teams look for in camp. He should have the inside track on a roster spot this summer, but he'll have some staunch competition.

The others

The Giants brought back Zaire Barnes, who was up and down from the practice squad last year. They signed ex-Jet and Kansas City backup Cam Jones in free agency and selected BYU's Jack Kelly in the sixth round of the draft this year. These three will have to stand out to make the 53-man roster, but early returns are showing the Giants high on Kelly.
