Hansi Flick requests Barcelona to bring in reinforcements in midfield – report

Having roped in Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon on steal deals this summer, much of Barcelona’s transfer activity is now focused towards signing a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Julian Alvarez is the chosen target and the club are willing to wait, in the hope that the Atletico Madrid forward can make one more push in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Barcelona have ruled out signing any new defender, as they have full faith in the likes of Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi.

That being said, coach Hansi Flick believes the team requires at least one new midfielder heading into this season.

That is perhaps why the German has requested the club, under its economic limitations, to try and reinforce the midfield, reports Gerard Romero.

Flick’s request is not surprising as Barcelona are facing a sticky situation in midfield heading into the new season.

Frenkie de Jong is currently nursing a long-term injury and is not coming back anytime soon. This is coupled with the fact that Marc Casado’s days at Barcelona could be numbered.

That leaves Flick with limited options in the middle of the park, with too much reliance on Pedri and Marc Bernal.

Eric Garcia can operate in midfield but he is more of a makeshift option while Gavi is seen as a more attacking option.

Given Barcelona’s current financial situation, the club must only look at cost-effective options in the transfer market.

The most obvious emergency option is Leon Goretzka, who is currently a free agent and has worked with Flick in the past. That being said, recent reports have ruled out a Barcelona move for Goretzka.

Yves Bissouma is another free agent available in the market, though it is unlikely Barcelona would consider a move for the former Spurs midfielder.

The Blaugrana have also made an enquiry for Manchester City’s Rodri, although he appears headed for Real Madrid.

Other than these options, Barcelona always have the luxury of keeping hold of Casado. The Spaniard has been a viable first-team option and could offer the club some vital depth until de Jong returns to full fitness.
