Ice hockey worlds 2027 to open in Schalke stadium like in 2010
Next year's ice hockey world championships in Germany will face off in Gelsenkirchen's big arena like they did in 2010, organizers said on Tuesday.
Hosts Germany will play Switzerland in the tournament opener on May 13, 2027, before all other games will take place in Dusseldorf and Mannheim.
The arena of Bundesliga football club Schalke officially seats 61,547 spectators but many more are expected as a large part of the football infield can also be used because the ice hockey rink is much smaller.
As a result, a then world record crowd of 77,803 came to watch the 2010 opener between Germany and the United States in the arena.
“Gelsenkirchen made ice hockey history in 2010. By hosting the opening match of the World Championship at this iconic venue, we are building on that ice hockey legacy,” said Matti Nurminen, secretary general of the governing body IIHF.
