"Know Your Facts Before You Speak": 5× WNBA All-Star Slams Skip Bayless for Overlooking Marina Mabrey in His Bold Caitlin Clark Claim

Skip Bayless has shown time and time again that he supports Caitlin Clark. So after Clark put up a 45-point performance against the Seattle Storm on Friday, he took the opportunity to shine the spotlight on Clark. Bayless posted on X to restate that Clark is the face of the league, and even suggested that no other WNBA player could deliver such a performance. However, that claim didn’t sit well with 5-time WNBA All-Star Angel McCoughtry.

“Skip, there are many players who’ve scored 40 points. So that means that your statement is wrong. Other WNBA players are capable. There was no tweet from you when Marina Mabrey scored 53 points this year.” McCoughtry said on Wednesday’s episode of the Just Women Sports podcast.

“This season, the record is 53 by Marina Mabry. Not one single peep from you. Which shows us that you’re on this clout bandwagon and you know nothing about this league… Yes, let’s enjoy her 40 points. But know your facts before you speak on this league or on a league you don’t even watch.”

As McCoughtry pointed out, Marina Mabrey scored 53 points in the Toronto Tempo’s 125-97 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. She tied the WNBA single-game scoring record held by Liz Cambage and A’ja Wilson. Her nine three-pointers from 18 attempts also tied the WNBA record for the most three-pointers made in a single game. It was, by any measure, a historic individual performance.

That being said, Caitlin Clark’s performance was historic as well. She became the first player in WNBA history to record a 40-point and 10-assist game in a single outing. Meanwhile, Bayless continues to analyze and post about Clark’s performances.

In fact, Bayless believes that after the WNBA All-Star Game, Clark could make a bid for the MVP award.

“I won’t be surprised if Caitlin Clark returns from the All-Star break and makes a run at MVP as the Fever continue to roll. She’s starting to look healthy and quick and in complete control of the W’s most explosive offense. But obviously she had to stay healthy, knock on wood,” Byaless wrote after Indiana’s latest win against the Connecticut Sun.

The 24-year-old guard scored 20 of her 21 points in the first half, helping Fever register the highest scoring half in the franchise’s history with 70 points as well as the overall franchise points record, beating the Sun 123-88.

Yet as Clark continues to reach individual milestones while helping her team set new standards, McCoughtry’s point also stands: The W has several stars who are breaking records. In fact, Lyxn rookie Olivia Miles has already outpaced Clark to reach 500 points and 150 assists.
